Traders of cattle and foodstuff under the aegis of Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria have agreed to lift the blockade of food to the South.
The agreement to recommence food transport to the soften parts of Nigeria was reached after a meeting between the union and Governor
The food and cattle traders embarked on the strike about a week ago following alleged killing of Fulani herdsmen in the southern part of the country.
Recall that northern traders had about a week embarked on strike over the alleged killing of Fulani herdsmen in the southern part of the country.
They had insisted that they would rather let the food items rot away than continue sending them to the South.
Some southerners who went to the markets in the last couple of days complained about food scarcity and where available, the prices had scarily sky rocketed.
Unfortunately, the items were going to waste in the North as a basket of tomatoes that used to sell for N800 started selling for N150 only.
The development was monitored on the Instagram handle of Gani Muhammed Ajowa, the Senior Special Adviser to the Ondo State Governor on New Media.
Mummy AdaDollar$@chiefladyhur· “When I got to the market and found out that people had cleared tomatoes, pepper in the market. I asked what happened and they said northerners are blocking trailers with foodstuff from coming into the south. I laughed cause they about to lose even more too.”
Other Southerners are of the opinion that the strike should have continued so that they cannot return to their age-old occupation which is farming.
Other reactions:
Prof Dr Ayomide@The_Nimbuzz “I don’t know where the northerns learnt that it’s economically wise to starve their only market, they deal solely on perishables and need the constant flow of produce to the consumers to avoid loss, but politics has blinded them, now they’re selling a basket of onions for 7k”
Onyewuchi Ejike@EjikeOnyewuchi· Replying to @The_Nimbuzz “These people needs to be taught a lesson of their life once and for all. Henceforth whatever nonsense they bring as foodstuff in the south, its price must be at the terms of the southerners, if they refuse they should take it back to the North.”
Femi Odere@femiodere1· “The decision of Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers to halt movements of food items from the North tothe South should be seen as a disgraceful humiliation that political leaders in the three southern regions must vow never to repeat itself in their lands again.”
