The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has described allegations of sleaze against General Yakubu Gowon, Former Head of State as outrageous and unsubstantiated.
A press statement signed by Ferdinand Nwoye said that the British lawmaker, Tom Tugendhat provided no evidence to back up his claims.
The parliamentarian alleged during a debate on Nigeria’s #EndSARS protest and human rights abuses brought before the parliament that Gowon had fled Nigeria with half of Nigeria’s Central Bank.
According to him, “we need to call out the corruption, we need to use the powers that we have in this country to stop those who are profiting from the wealth of that great nation and hiding it here…
“Now, some people will remember when General Gowon left Nigeria, he took half the Central Bank, so it is said, and moved to London.”
In the press statement released on the 27th of November, Ferdinand Nwoye said that the “Attention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been drawn to an outrageous and Unsubstantiated allegation in the United Kingdom Parliament against Retired General Yakubu Gowon, GCFR, a former Nigerian Head of State by Mr Tom Tugendhat, MP Chair, Foreign Afairs Committee of the House of Commons…
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Nigerian High Commission in London immediately sought an apology and retraction of the unsubstantiated allegation from the British Government…”
