News - Women's Perspective

The last is not yet heard of the BRT/train collision at the Shogunle rail line.

After the accident, victims in the bus, who witnessed what happened said that the bus driver’s stubbornness was what caused the accident, as they cautioned him to allow the train pass before he crossing the rail tracks but he refused.

According to Punch Newspaper the flagman on duty that day, who refused to give his name for security reasons, insists he flagged the BRT driver to stop more than five times but, he refused to do so.

The flagman said, “Nobody will blame me for not doing my job, I flagged him 5 times, he did not hear me. I kept waving the red flag, whistling and shouting, asking the BRT driver not to make the move to cross as a train was oncoming at high speed but he refused to hear me. Now, you see what has happened.”

The flagman added that if invited anywhere to defend himself, he will as he makes sure he is always prompt to his duty post even with the very early morning shift.

He noted that some drivers completely defy his signals, insult and humiliate him.

In his words, “One day, one of the drivers even spat at me because I flagged him down to save his life and you won’t believe that particular driver, still drove past the crossing despite the warning. I am just angry the BRT driver had passengers. If it was just him, I wouldn’t be this pained.”
