President Muhammadu Buhari has constituted a team of Federal Government officials to meet with Twitter over the recent suspension of the operations of the social media platform from the Nigerian space.
The approval was announced in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.
The statement which was signed Segun Adeyemi, Special Assistant, Lai Mohammed is charged with heading the team.
Other members of the team are:
- Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami
- Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami
- Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama
- Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola
- Minister off Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige
- Representatives of several government agencies
Twitter deleted a post where President Muhammadu Buhari threatened to deal with those causing trouble in the land, the way the military dealt with them during the nation’s civil war.
He confirmed that he was an active member of the military that fought the civil war on the Nigerian side.
According to him, “Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurs during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the field for 30 months who went through the war, will treat them in the language thy understand.”
Apparently angered by the threat, the Igbos who are largely members of the agitation for cessation to form the Biafra state called on Twitter to sanction the president.
The outrage as well as the international condemnation that greeted the president’s post prompted Twitter to delete it citing violation of its rules.
In reaction, and angered by the action of the microblogging platform, the Federal Government suspended the operations of the bird app in Nigeria indefinitely.
Lai Mohammad cited the continuous use of the platform for actives capable of destabilising the corporate existence of the country.
