News - Women's Perspective

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has reacted to the decision of the  All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu to pick a non-Christian, Senator Kashim Shettima as running mate.

The APC presidential flag bearer, in an interview with journalists on Sunday after a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State confirmed Senator Shettima as his running mate.

Shettima, is the Senator representing Borno Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly. He will replace Ibrahim Masari, whose name was submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on a place holder basis pending the choice of a substantive candidate.

In his reaction to The Whistler’s request for comment on Sunday, the Special Assistant (Media and Communications) to the CAN President, Rev Dr Samson Ayokunle, Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, noted that the current realities in Nigeria, where Christians and Muslims are being targeted by terrorists, calls for wisdom in the selection of leaders that will represent Nigerians.

According to him, “The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has stated it clearly that the situation in the country now is not suitable for a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

“It is up to Nigerians to accept or reject. Today’s Nigeria is not the same as when Nigerians voted Abiola-Kingibe ticket which was eventually annulled.

“Our prayers are with Nigeria and Nigerians.”
