Canada has introduced changes to its Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) rules, removing the field-of-study requirement for international students graduating from college degree programs.
According to Vanguard, this update, which applies to both college and university graduates, aims to simplify regulations and make Canada’s international education sector more accessible.

The field-of-study requirement, introduced in 2024, applied only to college graduates, leaving university graduates unaffected.
According to The Economic Times, this rule was part of a broader government initiative to tighten oversight of international education, as highlighted in a report by ICEF Monitor.
With the latest adjustment, students graduating from any Canadian bachelor’s or master’s degree program—whether from a college or university—will now qualify for the PGWP, provided they meet language requirements.
The policy shift is expected to benefit Canadian colleges, which have traditionally attracted large numbers of international students, particularly in business-related programs.
These institutions are recognized for equipping students with in-demand skills for the Canadian job market.
By eliminating the field-of-study restriction, the government aims to enhance the appeal of Canadian colleges to international students, making them more competitive in global recruitment efforts.
