Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido has expressed doubts that Former President Goodluck Jonathan is still a member of the party.
Asked during an interview with BBC if Jonathan is still a member of the main opposition party, the PDP chieftain said, “I doubt it; he has not been attending recent activities of our party.”
On why PDP leaders met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Ogun State, the former governor disclosed that party leaders went to discuss ways to get Nigerians out of the current challenges they are experiencing under the Muhammadu Buhari administration.
“Since the coming of Buhari’s administration Nigeria has not be itself as all the foundations for development laid down by PDP are all destroyed by this government.
“We have no peace, no unity, no integrity, no trust and there is abject poverty and we want to change these things. So that is why we decided to go and meet Obasanjo and we did so. We spent at least two hours discussing with him,” he said.
Goodluck Jonathan completed the tenure of former President Umar Musa Yar’Adua when the latter died of a kidney condition in office. He had only been in office for 2 years.
Yar’Adua was President of Nigeria from 2007 to 2010 under the PDP.
Having completed his principal’s 4-year tenure, Jonathan contested the presidential election and won but lost a re-election bid to current President Muhammadu Buhari who ran under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In spite of the fact that he is seen as a leading member of the PDP, Jonathan was absent at the PDP National convention that produced Senator Iyorchia Ayu as chairman and other national officers.
There have been many reports linking the former president with the APC as he has held many closed meetings with Buhari at the presidential villa.
Many also believe that 2 northern governors are behind a plot to field the former PDP president as a candidate for the 2023 general elections.
