Chinese Doctors Will not Treat Nigerians, Minister of Health

Coronavirus Pandemic News - Women's Perspective

Chinese doctors who arrived Nigeria via the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport will not treat Nigerians.

The assertion was made by the Minster of Health, Osagie Ehanire. The minister said they will only conduct capacity building in the fight against #COVID19. Ehanire added that the 15-man team is in Nigeria on the insistence of Chinese companies operating within Nigeria’s boarders.

The group of companies made the gesture as a show of solidarity with the government in its efforts to combat covid-19. He said the companies donated at least $1.3 million worth of medical consumables and equipment to augment Nigerian government’s efforts at combatting the killer disease.

According to him, the Chinese doctors will provide first-hand experience and insights on how they were able to stamp down the coronavirus spread in China and bring it under control.

Speaking further, Ehanire said that “all available resources shall be deployed to support adequate engagement of Nigerian medical experts towards curbing the spread of covid-19 in Nigeria.”

While allaying the fears of Nigerians, the Health Minister said that “The Federal Ministry of Health assures that the Federal Government, through the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), will ensure the quality of all medical supplies that were brought into the country.

“It must be stressed that following global best practices and in line with our advisory, the medical experts from China have gone into isolation for 14 days and will be tested for covid-19. Ehanire said.

“The Federal Ministry of Health will ensure proper distribution of the donations and strategic engagement with the medical team from China to work with Nigerian medical experts.

“It is important to emphasise that the guests are not here to treat patients but to conduct capacity building based on their experience”
