Marketers of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) popularly known as cooking gas have warned that the price of the product may increase to N10,000 by December.
Already, the price of the 12.5kg which used to sell for N3,500 a month ago is currently selling for between N7,500 and N8,000.
Marketers are worried that the supply shortage may see the price escalate to N10,000 or more in the next 2 months.
Speaking at a Pan-African forum, Platforms for Africa on Saturday, October 9, LPG marketers said many Nigerians have gone back to using firewood, sawdust, charcoal and other unrefined energy sources for cooking.
They lament that even the prices of those materials are also on the rise.
The Executive Secretary of the National Association of LPG Marketers, Mr Bassey Essien, urged the government to review the recently introduced import charges and Value Added Tax.
He said that if the advise is not heeded, “the price of cooking gas may as well reach N10,000 for the 12.5kg cylinder.”
He added however, that marketers are discussing with government officials on how the situation could be addressed.
Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG, LP gas, or condensate), is a flammable mixture of hydrocarbon gases such as propane and butane.
