A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to pay the sum of N2 million as damages to activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore for seizing his phones since 2019.
In addition to the compensation for general damages, the DSS was also ordered to tender a public apology in 2 national newspapers to the ‘Revolution Now’ agitator.
Sowore was arrested by the DSS on the 2nd of August 2019 and his phones and an unspecified sum of money seized by the security agents.
He was however, granted bail by 2 courts but the DSS failed to set him free immediately until the 24th of December 2019.
He then sued the security agency for refusing to return his confiscated phones and cash.
While delivering judgement today, 8th of December, Justice Anwuli Chiekere held that the suit is not an abuse of court process as claimed by the respondent’s lawyers.
She ordered that the phones and money seized from Sowore in August 2019 be returned to him and N2 million compensation paid him as damages.
Justice Chiekere also ordered that the DSS apologises to the former presidential candidate publicly in 2 national dailies.
Sowore was seen leaving the court premises today with his fans chanting solidarity songs.
