A sharia court sitting in the Rijiyar Zaki area of Kano has ordered a woman to sweep the street for 30 days for insulting her neighbour.
Mallama Rabi was sentenced to community service for calling her neighbour a “prostitute.”
Presiding judge, Halhalatul Khuza’l of the Sharia court, on Wednesday, 26th of January, found Rabi guilty and ordered her to sweep her street for 30 days.
BBC reports that Rabi began the community service on Thursday and said she is satisfied with the judgement.
In Nigeria, Sharia has been instituted as a main body of civil and criminal law in twelve Muslim-majority states since 1999
This began when the then-Zamfara State governor Ahmad Sani Yerima began the push for the institution of Sharia at the state level of government.
