Danger loomed at FESTAC link bridge today as residents scooped petrol in buckets and kegs from the spillage of a fallen tanker.
The accident occurred when the tanker laden with 33,000 litres of petrol overturned in motion while on the bridge.
Olufemi Oke Osanyintolu, Director General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said the trans-loading to the remain contents were ongoing at the time we received the report.
Oke-Osanyintolu added that emergency responders were also at the scene to avert any disaster.
According to him, “The agency responded to distress calls at about 0600hrs this morning and arrived to find an overturned tanker with its contents (33,000 litres of petrol) rapidly spilling due to the effect of gravity on the overturned tanker.
“While immediate action by the joint team (comprising of Agency Firefighters, Lagos Fire Service and the Police) was taken to prevent a secondary incident, the scene was invaded by people carrying kegs attempting to scoop the product.
This required additional police support. Trans-loading of product is ongoing,” he said.
So far, no human casualty has been reported as the emergency services appear to have adequately controlled the situation.
