The Nigerian Senate is considering a bill to capture the database for cows, goats and other animals in the country.
The bill which seeks for an act to provide information for the National Livestock Bureau scaled second reading at plenary on Tuesday
It is sponsored by Senator Muhammed Enagi representing Niger South senatorial district.
According to him, livestock identification by the agency will include ownership and other details like origin, birthplace, sex, breed etc.
In the provisions of the bill, the bureau will be in charge of the identification, traceability and registration of livestock such as cows and goats. This will, among other things, curb cattle rustling in Nigeria.
It will also create a national livestock identification database, control movement of livestock and ensure their management to prevent disease outbreaks.
Enagi also wants the proposed bureau to be charged with ensuring food safety, transparency and information in the food chain in addition to the prevention of rustling that has led to incessant farmer/herder conflict in the country.
If the bill is passed, another provisions is the monitoring of the movement of livestock including animal products imported into or sold in Nigeria.
It has been referred to the Senate Committee on Agriculture and rural development for further action.
Reactions:
Blessed Beyond Measure (BBM)@Drmuzoic·Why is having a national database for cows important to the extent that we have to pay some afo beers to debate the issue?
Don Kingi@donkingi101·There must be something about the breed of cows inNigeria that they are not telling us. Data base for cow kwanu when there is no standard unified database for humans, citizens. Hope they will have for chickens, fishes, goats and the rest too? Nitwits.
