Nigeria’s award-winning Afro beat sensation, David Adeleke, better known as Davido has completed the sharing of N250 million to 292 orphanages across Nigeria.
The singer had challenged his friends and colleagues to donate N1 million each ahead of his birthday to prove that they are truly his friends.
There was a frenzy to take up the challenge with many donating way beyond the requested amount. Some donated in foreign currencies while fans joined in the fray, giving as little as N1,000.
The singer within hours received ₦200m from his friends and colleagues in the entertainment industry, to the amazement of social media users.
Moved by the gesture, Davido decided to give all the donations away to orphanages.
He added his own N50 million to make it N250 million, set up a 5-man disbursement committee and gave them the disbursement guidelines.
That done, he has undertaken to give an update on the exercise in a letter, with lists of beneficiaries by states.
According to Davido, “I bring you an update as promised. Since its inauguration, the members of the committee have worked tirelessly to ensure that they collate the names and information of the documented and verified orphanages.
“So far, the total of N250m has been disbursed to 292 orphanages.
“I thought it wise to give you my loyal fans, friends and family an update in this regard.
“Thank you to everyone who made this possible. Thank you for your continuous support and prayer.
“Always remember, we rise by lifting others.”
