The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested the Chairman of Kano Consumer Protection Council (CPC), General Idiris Dambazau.
Vanguard reports that he is being held over allegations of economic sabotage.
A source told the newspaper that the security operatives said the DSS accused General Dambazau (rtd) of unilateral closure of seven petrol filling stations without recourse to due process.
It explained further that all efforts to make Dambazau open the stations failed despite the fact that his action was illegal and he had gone beyond his call of duty.
The security operative view General Dambazau’s actions as deliberate acts of economic sabotage with the intention to create scarcity of the commodity in Kano were there was none.”
The DSS source who spoke on conditions of anonymity explained that section 48 of the Nigerian constitution
clearly states that any government minister, department or agency exercising any power or function or taking any action what may have direct impact on midstream or downstream petroleum operations shall consult with the authority.
The section points to the fact that this must precede the issuing of any regulations, guidelines, enforcement order or directives which the General disregarded.
The DSS added that even after consulting with the relevant authority, the authority is expected to review the recommendations of the government minister or agency and communicate the decisions before the decisions can be complied with.
