Ekweremadu: FG Begins Investigations Breach of Personal Data

News - Women's Perspective

The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau, has commenced investigations into the leak of the personal data of David Ukpo Nwamini, the young man who was allegedly trafficked to the UK by former Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate  Ike Ekweremadu with the intent of harvesting his kidney for his ailing daughter.

The Uxbridge Magistrate Court in London last week, commenced the trial of Ekweremadu and his wife Beatrice on conspiracy charges, modern slavery of a minor and organ harvest.

The couple has however, pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Pictures of David’s Nwamina passport and National Identification Number soon appeared online showing he is not a minor as initially thought.

Reacting to the development, in a statement issued on Monday, the National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, NDPB, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, ordered an investigation into the breach of Nwamina data and data privacy of Sonia Ekweremadu, the daughter of the Ekweremadus.

The statement read in part, “The National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Nigeria Data Protection Bureau, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, has ordered an investigation into the use and public circulation of the personal data allegedly belonging to Nwamini David and Sonia Ekweremadu in the ongoing case of organ transplant pending before a British Court.

“The bureau notes with concern that certain sensitive personal data purportedly belonging to the two Nigerian citizens (complainant and patient) in this case are being processed by data controllers – particularly media organization – without regard to the implications under the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation 2019.

“NDPR prohibits the processing of personal data without the informed consent or other lawful bases known to law.”
