News - Women's Perspective

A bill to amend the Electoral Act and make electronic transmission of results compulsory has passed 2nd reading in the House of Representatives.

The bill which is sponsored by Honourable Francis Waive, proposes that the general elections be conducted on the same day to save money and time for the country as well as prevent the bandwagon effect.

The amendment not only seeks to make electronic transmission of results compulsory but also, to punish persons who file frivolous petitions with heavy fines to reduce the number of cases that end up in court.

The amendment will cause the electoral umpire to carry out a fresh registration exercise for eligible voters.

The bill titled “A Bill for an Act to amend the Electoral Act, 2022 and for Related Matters” was sponsored by the member representing Ughelli North/Ughelli South/Udu Federal Constituency, Delta State, Francis Waive.
