Embattled Okorocha Speaks on Being Screened for APC Presidential Primary Election

News - Women's Perspective

The embattled former Governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas Okorocha, has confirmed that he will attend the ongoing All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential primary election screening.

The exercise commenced of its presidential aspirants commenced on Monday ahead of the party’s primaries fixed for the 6th and 7th of June.

A total of 23 aspirants purchased and submitted their nomination forms to run for the APC 2023 presidential race.

12 of the aspirants were, however, screened in the first batch of the exercise on Monday.

Chairing the screening committee is the former National Chairman of the APC, John Odigie-Oyegun.

In a chat with The Punch on Tuesday, one of Okorocha’s lawyers, Steve Asimobi, said the lawmaker will attend the screening exercise on Tuesday evening after his release from EFCC custody.

He disclosed that the sureties required for the release of the former governor are currently in court with all the requirements which were being processed.

Asimobi, however, stated Okorocha will be set free upon fulfilling all the bail conditions set by the court.

He said: “His Excellency, Rochas Okorocha would be attending the APC presidential screening later today. The court has granted him bail. Of course, there were two options, either to remand him in Kuje prison or the EFCC custody pending when we meet the bail condition.

“Hence the judge asked the EFCC to keep him in protective custody, and that is a usual administrative procedure. The judge also ordered the EFCC to return his international passport to the court today with immediate effect.

“As I speak to you, the sureties required are currently in court with all the requirements, and they’re processing it. So, once we’re gone with these, the judge would order the EFCC to release him. He’s only under the protective custody of the EFCC based on the directive of the court.”
