2 people have died as an explosion rocked Afariogun Street in the Ajao Estate of Isolo, Lagos.
The explosion happened at a domestic cooking gas shop adjacent to Faith City Hospital. The domestic gas refilling shop has seen a few smaller incidences in the past.
Yesterday’s explosion affected no less than 8 other shops and damaged an uncompleted building. One seriously injured victim was evacuated by onlookers and taken to the hospital for treatment.
Director, General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Sanyintolu confirmed the incident saying that the fire had been put out while 2 bodies were recovered from the scene of the accident.
According to him, “the agency received distress calls and upon arrival, at the scene, it was discovered that there was an explosion at Afariogun Street, Ajao Estate.
Investigations revealed that the explosion originated from a shop occupied by a gas refilling business. A total of 9 shops were affected by the inferno.”
Footage of the explosion showed charred vehicles and people running helter skelter the minute the explosion happened.
D’Orator, an eyewitness describes what he saw. According to him:
Afariogun Street in Ajao Estate is home to many neighbourhood shops and artisans. An apparent resident area, it is gradually becoming a small business and industrial district as it also has a number of warehouses, factories and worship centres.
