A few minutes after take-off, the engine developed a problem and failed completely.
Eyewitnesses say they saw the pilot struggle to steer the aircraft away from a densely populated part of town.
It finally crash-landed while approaching runway 22 at 10:48am bursting into flames killing all occupants.
Aviation Minister, Hadi Sariki confirmed the incident in a tweet on Sunday.
According to him,
Hadi Sirika@hadisirika·A military aircraft King Air 350 has just crashed short of our Abuja runway after reporting engine failure enroute Minna. It appears to be fatal. We should remain calm & wait for the outcome of investigation by the military, while we pray for the departed soul/souls if any.”
Meanwhile, the Archbishop of Calabar Dioceses, Methodist Church, Nigeria, Most Rev Emmanuel Udofia has accused the Federal Government of lacking maintenance culture.
Speaking to newsmen today, Monday, Act Udofia said that “It is really unfortunate that such a thing will happen in Nigeria, when you consider the calibre of people that died even if they were only crew members.
“Now this is a critical time in our nation where we are looking for the services of specialised people and then we lose them by crash ?
“What is happening with our maintenance culture, does it mean they did not service the aircraft before it was put in the air ? And that is very unfortunate for specialised people to go down the drain.
“This is not an ordinary aircraft, it a specialised aircraft, managed by specialised people and when things like this happen, we talk of setting up a probe, what kind probe are they going to carry out, are they going to recover the lives of those that died ? the clergyman asked.
