The powerful political camp of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu is said to be in fear following the emergence of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun as the head of the presidential screening panel of the party.
Sources say that Tinubu and the former national chairman of the party have not been on good terms since the governorship election in Edo State in 2020.
Chief Oyegun would chair the panel that will screen presidential aspirants on Monday and Tuesday.
Tinubu, in the last election in Edo State had supported Pastor Ize-Iyamu against Governor Godwin Obaseki who is supported by Oyegun.
The development saw Obaseki eventually winning the APC primary election at that time.
Politicians in Tinubu’s camp believed Oyegun engaged in anti-party activities to ensure the victory of Obaseki.
The political camp of Tinubu fear that Oyegun might use the exercise as payback time.
One of the leaders of the Tinubu support group while speaking on the emergence of Oyegun said that, “There is fear and anxiety among the aspirants and the various camps because Chief Oyegun has become a controversial and polarising figure in the party.
“He was among those who plotted against the removal of Adams Oshiomhole and sack of immediate past NWC. He supported Obaseki in an election where APC had a Governorship candidate in Edo State. The issue has become if Chief Oyegun will be impartial”
Another Tinubu supporter said, “Why Oyegun of all people? How can he be a neutral party in this case? We all know the role played by Tinubu in Oyegun’s removal and what Oyegun also did in the last Edo election. I hope he won’t be biased.”
