February 1 is annually marked as World Hijab Day and has been since 2013.
The founder of the Day, Nazma Khan began reminding women irrespective of faith, since the 11th of December to join muslim women in adoring the clothing on the 1st of February.
She however adds that, “When we invite women to wear the hijab for a day on #WorldHijabDay, we are not asking them to go against their faith. However, when we are asked to remove our #hijab, we are asked to go against our faith, which is a violation of basic human rights.
World Hijab Day is currently observed in about 140 countries, worldwide, each year.
It seeks to encourage women of all religions and backgrounds to wear and experience the hijab.
In defence of her choice to adorn the religious clothing, Nigeria’s activist, Aisha Yesufu insists that, “I wear the hijab and it is my right to. My choice and it is deserving of your tolerance.
“You can choose not to respect that choice but you have to tolerate it because it is my choice. I have a right to it just as you have a right to yours #EndHijabophobia@WorldHijabDay“
One of Aisha’s fans, Ebubechukwu@ebubec1 says that the clothing may not be suitable for women in very hot countries.
According to him, “For very hot countries in the tropics like Nigeria, I think it’s mentality of subservience to previous masters that make people wear clothing that is obviously bad for the weather suing as suits, hijab etc.
“Imagine someone that cannot afford air conditioned cars or homes, they Will really stink. Hijab and suits are for people like you that can afford those things.
“I hate the fact that Nigerians especially women are subjugated to a specific way of dressing because of professional, religion, etc. even the English have abolished wigs in law practice”
