In order to ease the perennial heavy traffic gridlock from Asaba through Onitsha, the Nigerian Federal Government opened the bridge to allow the East-bound traffic to move with ease.
The Federal Road Safety Corps on Wednesday confirmed the 2nd Niger Bridge was temporarily opened to ease the traffic pressure on the old Niger Bridge during the yuletide season when traffic volumes normally increased.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Anambra State, CC Adeoye Irelewuyi who spoke with a journalist in his office in Awka said the corps anticipated an increase in traffic volume and prepared deployments and logistics towards it.
Irelewuyi added that the initial opening of the 2nd Niger Bridge from 15th December 2022 to 1st January 2023 was to allow vehicles coming from the West into the East.
From 2nd January to 15th of January, 2023, traffic inward the East will be closed while vehicles would only use the bridge to move from the East to the West.
He said the Minister of Transport, Rabi Fashola temporarily opened it so that pressure on the old bridge would be eased.
