The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed says that the Federal Government is getting closer to an agreement with the micro-blogging website, Twitter.
Hetty’s Media reported that the Federal Government imposed an indefinite suspension on the bird app on the 4th of June following its deletion of a Tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a media briefing with heads of global media companies on Friday in Washington, the Minister of Information said that the government is doing all it can to lift the suspension.
He revealed that Twitter has agreed to 7 out of 10 demands that the Nigerian Government made to lift the ban imposed on the social media platform in the country.
Mohammed said that some of the demands made to Twitter were for the platform to register its operations as a Nigerian company, pay taxes from the revenue made from the country and ensure that no harmful content is published using its channels.
He disclosed that the reason for the suspension is the “persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.”
The minister added that other social media platforms have also been conscious and alert to injurious content likely to threaten national unity.
According to him,
“We believe that even the other three outstanding demands are not really about whether they agreed or not but about timing and scheduling.
“That is what gave me the confidence that we are getting nearer to an agreement.
“As recently as last week, we exchanged correspondence with Twitter, and when I left him a few days ago. We are expecting a reply from them.
“It is left with Twitter to respond to grey areas that we asked them to look into.
“We are not inflexible in our negotiation with Twitter because we recognise both the positive and negative aspects of social media.”
