Federal Government Excludes ASUU From IPPIS, Raises University Funding

News - Women's Perspective

The Federal Government (FG) has finally acceded to ASUU’s demand and agreed to exclude them from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

FG also agreed to pay all outstanding salaries from February to June using the old payment system, GIFMIS.

The development formed part of the agreements reached after a 7-hour meeting between the Federal Government delegation led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige and the members of ASUU LED BY ITS President, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi on Friday.

Ngige said that government has agreed to increase the Earned Academic Allowance of the lecturers from N30 billion to N35 billion and revitalisation fund for the universities from N25 billion to N25 billion.

Also acceded to is the “no work, no pay” rule which was waived as a fallout of yesterday’s meeting.

Labour Minister thereafter advised the Union leaders to relay the massage to their various organs so that the universities can reopen next week.

According to Ngige, “The meeting agreed that the Federal Ministry of Education and that of Labour and Employment will look into the issue of ‘no work, no pay’ as stipulated in Section 43 of the Trade Union Disputes Act, Cap 18 laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 with a view to getting approval for the withheld salaries to be paid.

“It was also agreed that the mode of payment applied for those that had not been captured on the IPPIS platform between the months of February and June, 2020 be adopted for the purpose of payment during this transition period.”

Prof Ogunyemi on his part, told journalists that all the points discussed will be taken back to the organs of ASUU with a view to returning to the negotiating table next week with a report.
