President Buhari has approved the immediate disbursement of the Micro Enterprise Enhancement Scheme (MEES) funds to 2000 Women and Youth in Edo State.
The funds will be spread across the three senatorial districts of the state. What the Federal government aslso describes as a Small Scale Enterprise Program will be supervised by the Honourable Minister of State for Labour and employment, Barrister Festus Keyamo, SAN.
The largesse comes 48 hours before the governorship elections in the state and has sent shock waves through the camp of the People Democratic Party (PDP) and the incumbent governor and governorship candidate, Godwin Obaseki.
Micro Enterprise Enhancement Scheme has all the the tenets of Trader Moni and Market Moni described by many as a vote buying tactic by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Trader Moni, no doubt played into the emotions of the grassroots who make the majority of voters across the country. Fears are that the same impact will be felt in the Edo State governorship election.
MEES is organised by the National Directorate of Employment. The venues of the the launch of the scheme are also PDP’s strongholds of Uromi and Auchi.
The dates are 15th to the 17th of September, hours before the elections. The dates and venues make the impact even more devastating for the PDP.
MEES has all the support of the government at the centre as, in addition to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Nasir Ladan Moh’d Argunugu, Director-General, National Directorate of Employment, will be the chief host.
To make matters worse, the wife of the APC governorship candidate, Prof Idia Ize-Iyamu Chairperson, Women and Youth will also co-host.
Trader Moni was supervised by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo just before and during the 2019 general elections.
