The federal government has disclosed those behind the Kuje Prison invasion which happened on Tuesday night.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Mr. Shuaibu Belgore noted that the Boko Haram terror group is suspected to be behind the onslaught. He said this when he visited the facility on Wednesday morning.
Belogore said that about 600 inmates escaped from the facility following Tuesday’s attack but security operatives have been able to re-arrest 300 of them while efforts are ongoing to arrest others.
He added that 994 inmates were held at the facility before the attack by Boko Haram terrorists who he said launched the attack to free some of their members in prison.
The government official also confirmed the death of one person and the injury of three others during the attack.
It will be recalled that at least three bomb explosions were heard on Tuesday night in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory as the terrorists stormed the Kuje Medium Custodial Centre and bombed sections of the facility.
Reports say that they moved into the facility and freed some of their members, shooting sporadically to cause panic during the attack.
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has since confirmed the attack adding that security operatives returned fire during the attack and reinforcements deployed to restore calm.
