The Federal Government has extended the deadline given telecommunications operators to block Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) the are not linked to users’ National Identification Number (NIN).
This follows the meeting of the Task Force on NIN and SIM Registration which took place on Monday in Abuja.
The extended deadline is part of the resolutions reached at the meeting presided over by the Minister of Communicatios and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami.
The deadline has therefore been moved from the 30th of December to the 19th of January, 2021.
Also extended is the registration of subscribers without NIN which is moved from December 30 to February 9, 2021.
This was confirmed at the end of the meeting by the Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof Umar Dambatta and the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Aliyu Aziz.
According to him, “NIMC has provided strategies to enable citizens attend the registration in full compliance with covid19 protocols – particularly the use of face masks which remains mandatory and maintenance of social distancing.
He also added that “The president appreciates Nigerians for their patience and commitment to updating their identities.
“The Federal Government also thanks all stakeholders for their compliances with the directives.”
Following the massive crowds of applicants at the NIMC registration centres yesterday, all the premises were shut down followed by an advisory by the commission:
