Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has disclosed that the Federal Government (FG) will not hesitate ban all social media platforms that allow their apps to be used to propagate the division of the country.

He said this when he appeared before the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Information, Justice and Communication on Tuesday.

The minister was invited to the House to answer questions bothering on the ban of Twitter by the Federal Government.

He added that the bird app made its platform the favourite for those who want to destabilise and cause disunity in the country.

Mohammed insisted that “we want Twitter to be registered first before they can operate.”

When asked if a channel of dialogue has been opened with Twitter, he said that, “We tried to but they rebuffed us. They are not known to us. They are not registered but we hope we will be able to engage them.”

He regretted that the organisation had no investment in Nigeria but in Ghana while the target market is Nigeria.

Lai Mohammed also denied that the the platform was banned to stifle free speech in Nigeria. According to him, “There was no intention of the federal government to stifle free speech in the country. The only reason we suspended Twitter is that it was promoting disunity. Its activities are inimical to the unity of the country.”

He added that government will not hesitate to ban other social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Google Hangout and any other that is found to be promoting disunity in the country.

Meanwhile, reactions have continued to trail the action of the government on restricting social media use.

·Great to see #TwitterBan TRENDING!! For a sec I thought we had gotten comfortable with VPN! Today marks 18Days since this terrible ban, they needed 10Days to investigate it’s been GOOD 18Days still nothing!!! We MUST #KeepitOn !!!

DR.PENKING™@drpenking·The #TwitterBan has knocked heavily on Buhari even more than it has knocked on the targets of the ban. They want to lift it so bad but they don’t want to look like losers. That’s the whole aim of setting up a team to engage Twitter. Nonsense tactics.
