A final-year student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has been killed by suspected cultists.
The young man has been identified simply as Desmond.
The deceased popularly known as ‘Mayor’ was shot dead in his room at the Hall 3 Hostel at about 9:00pm on Monday, April 3, 2023.
The late student was said to be in the Department of Public Administration and a Kegite chief. Kegites are a group of happy-go-lucky young men and women who gather regularly to make make merry and throw banters.
They typically wear white short ‘agbadas’ and drink the local brew, palm wine. No trace of cultism has been linked to them from inception, neither has any diabolical initiation been associated with them.
In spite of their meetings associated with palm wine, no drunkenness or substance abuse have also been traced to them.
A student who pleaded anonymity said the deceased was shot in the face at point-blank range.
“The killing of Desmond has caused panic in the school. Students are even afraid to stay in the hostel. He was shot in the face and had no chance to survive the attack.” the student said.
It was gathered that his remains has been deposited in the mortuary at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
