The management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has finally admitted advising youth corpers to prepare ransom money before embarking on any trip on the highways.
This, they said is in the event that they get waylaid and abducted. However, the management realised that different copies of the corpers’ handbook are in circulation, with some containing the cause while others do not.
The NYSC authorities, in a statement earlier released on Friday, had denied viral claims of advising serving corps members to prepared ransom in the event that they get kidnapped on high risk roads.
The rebuttal is a contained in a statement released o Friday by the management:
”The attention of Management of the National Youth Sevice Corps has been drawn to a fake release making the rounds on the social media to the effect that Corps Members travelling on “high-risk roads” should alert their families, friends and colleagues to have somebody to pay off the ransom that could be demanded in the event of being kidnapped.
“The management wishes to emphatically state that the clause quoted is not embedded in the NYSC Security Tips pamphlet which was put together by a highly respected retired security expert.
“The management wishes to appeal to the general public to always clarify issues with the Scheme.
Please, be wary of falling prey to the antics of mischief-makers out to ridicule the Scheme.”
The spokesperson of NYSC, Adenike Adeyemi, in another post sent to Premium times, confirmed the clause and added that investigations had commenced on the matter.
According to her, “We realised different copies are in circulation. We are investigating.”
The news of the clause went viral when the NYSC handbook the advise was discovered on page 57 advising both staff and corpers on safety conduct when kidnapped.
Part of the clause read: “Do not antagonise your captors, be polite and operate with reasonable regards.
The clause added that corpers must co-operate with kidnappers and they should, “Establish a personal relationship with your abductors as soon as possible.”
It added that, “The kidnappers may ask for contact persons, do not mention your place of work, but your close friends and parents. They will reach them to negotiate your release.”
