There was pandemonium this afternoon as fire razed a Supermarket belonging to the widow of late Oyo State Governor’s wife, Mrs Florence Ajimobi.
The supermarket, Grandex Stores is located at he Bodija area of Ibadan.
Reports say that the fire started at about 3:00pm, today Sunday from the back office of Grandex Stores and soon spread to the shopping area.
Oye State firefighters battled the fierce inferno for hours and successfully put it out.
One of the firefighters who preferred anonymity said the likely cause of the fire was an electric spark.
Shoppers and drivers whose cars were parked within the premises scampered to move them away from the raging flames.
Hoodlums who had gathered at the scene were prevented from gaining access to or looting the stores by personnel of Operation Burst.
An eyewitness, Bamidele Osinlowo said that “the fire started at about 3:00pm.
“We heard the shout of the workers, I immediately called the Oyo State Fire Service.
“Within minutes, they arrived with a bigger truck. We moved in to join them.”
Mrs Ajimobi was later at the scene to assess the damage. Her aides were also on hand to evacuate goods from the stores while state security agencies held back the crowd.
