Nigeria’s first female Vice Chancellor, Grace Alele-Williams is dead. She died at the age of 89 on Friday, 25th of March, 2022.
Alele-Williams, a professor of mathematics gained prominence after she was appointed the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in 1985.
She is reputed to have effectively curbed the rising cultism in the institution at that time.
Prior to her appointment as Vice-Chancellor, she made history as the first Nigerian woman to obtain a doctorate degree in Mathematics education in 1963 when such science subjects were seen as the sole preserve of male graduates.
Grace Alele-Williams is also the first Nigerian woman to receive a doctorate degree.
President Muhammadu Buhari had facilitated with the former VC on her 89th birthday in December 2021, applauding her role in ridding UNIBEN of cultism.
Speaking on behalf of his principal, Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina wrote: “President Buhari congratulates the educationist on her achievements over many years, inspired by vision and hard work, becoming the first woman to earn a Ph.D in Nigeria (1963), and using her resources to create opportunities for other women, particularly in getting education.”
It is not yet certain, what led to the death of one of Nigeria’s most valuable dons as at the time of this report.
