There is flood disaster in Niger State as at least, 17000 communities are reportedly submerged.
The information was given by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Ahmed Matane.
The Information Officer to the Secretary, Tanko Lawal quotes Matane said that the SSG issued the statement during an on-the-spot assessment of the flood situation in Mokwa Local Government Area of the State.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), not less than 60,000 people are rendered homeless due to collapsed houses and submerged farmlands in the affected Local Government Areas.
Among the most adversely affected LGAs are: Lapai, Edati,Lavun, Shiroro, Munya, and Wushisi.
The SSG said that the State government has begun the distribution of 2,400, assorted grains to all affected communities to alleviate the suffering that resulted from the floods
He added that the government also plans to relocate the people of Muregi that are the worst hit to the New Muregi before the end of Governor Abubakar Bello’s Administration.
Alhaji Muhammad Muregi, the Kuta of Kede as well as the District Head of Jaaji, Alhaji Yahaya Aliyu appelaed to the government to also come to their aid.
According to them, many households have lost their shelter and means of livelihood.
The Secretary to the State Government toured the affected areas with House of Assembly members representing Lavun and Edati Constituencies, Salihu Tama and Abdulahi Gbara.
Also in tow were the Chairman of Mokwa LGA as well as top politicians and government functionaries.
