Former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mr Maikanti Baru is dead. 

Current Managing Director of @NNPCgroup, Mele Kyari announced his death early this morning. According to him, Maikanti Baru died last night. 

In Kyari’s words, “My brother, my friend and my mentor, Dr Maikanti Kachalla Baru, immediate past GMD of NNPC died last night. He was of exemplary character and disposition.

Kyari prayed Allah to forgive him and have mercy on him.

According to Adetutu Balogun @Tutsy22, Baru died of covid19. She reported further that he arrived the NNPC Clinic on May the 27th and was attended to by the nurses and doctors.

Posting further, she said that a covid19 test was run on him but it returned negative. He then spent 2 days at the Maitama Clinic of the NNPC but died at the Cedar Crest Hospital, Abuja.

Tributes have continued to pour in for late Baru:

Niger state Government says that Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, chairman North Central Governors’ forum, “received with shock, news of the passing away of immediate past NNPC GMD, Dr Maikanti Baru.

Nigeria’s House of Representatives sent in its condolences through the official twitter handle of the speaker: 

“The Speaker of the House of Representatives Rep Femi Gbajabiamila has described as painful, the passing away of the immediate past Group Managing Director (GMD) of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mikani Baru. 

The message adds that Baru gave his best to the country and would be remembered for his contributions to NNPC.

Baru’s death counts as the second in the covid19 casualties among high profile Federal Government officials as a result. The previous one was Abba Kyari who died on the 17th of April, 2020.
