Gay Marriage: Methodist Church Nigeria Parts Ways with British Church

News - Women's Perspective

The Methodist Church of Nigeria (MCN) has broken ties with the British Methodist Church (BMC) over the latter’s endorsement of gay marriage.

The announcement was made on the 2nd of July in Lagos in a statement released by the MCN Director, Oladapo Daramola.

He said that MCN was disappointed by the the decision of the British Church to favour same-sex unions during its just concluded conference.

In a message shared with his members, the Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, His Eminence Chukwumerije Kanu-Uche, announced the MCN decision to cut all formal relationships with the British Methodist Church.

He also, reminded the MCN that John Wesley had predicted that “a time will come when the Methodist Church will exist as a dead sect, having the form of religion and denying the power thereof unless they continue with the spiritual fervency with which they started.”

The Prelate added that the BMC “is only a sister church. The MCN gained autonomy in 1962 and became autocephalous in 1963. So we can part ways with the British Conference and have nothing to lose. I only pity those romancing with them because of pecuniary interests.

“Suggestion to write or visit the British Methodist Conference is an insult on Methodist Church.

“As a remedial measure, let every Bishop and Archbishop tell our members that MCN does not support gay or same-sex marriage,” the Prelate said.

For that reason, according to him, the British Methodist Church was no longer the the mother of the Methodist Church of Nigeria.
