Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has picked his deputy, Phillip Shiabu as running mate in the upcoming gubernatorial election.
The election is slated for the 19th of September 2020.
Obaseki made the announcement while receiving his certificate of return and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag at the National Secretariat in Abuja.
In his remarks, the governor said that his “emergence as the governorship candidate of the PDP in the just concluded primary election is just the hand of God. It is miraculous. I and my deputy are grateful to this great party.”
Godwin Obaseki added that “in hours of tribulation, in our political storm, PDP gave us a huge umbrella. This ought to be our first party because of the values of justice and fairness. We found out that transparency and quality of governance weigh in this party.
He thanked the organising committee comprising Austin Akobundu, National Organising Secretary and Kola Ologbodinyan, National Publicity Secretary for facilitating his waiver and nomination.
Reports also say that the National Working Committee of the APC headed by President Muhammadu Buhari tried in vane to prevail on the Governor to stay with the APC.
According to Waziri Bulama, National Secretary of the APC, “President Buhari talked to Obaseki. He appealed to all the stakeholders and the APC Governors Forum sent a delegation led by Ganduje.
“The party set up a committee led by the senate president. Obaseki said he did not want claiming he was biased.”
“They sent another team. All these options and more were explored but unfortunately, nothing worked and it led to a point, regrettably, where Obaseki left the party.”
