The Lagos State Government has suspended the operations of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), in the Idumota area of Lagos.
Gbenga Omotosho, Commissioner for Information and Strategy confirmed the suspension on Tuesday.
Government action comes a few days after a deadly clash between rival gangs in the area which left a number of people dead.
Lagos State Rapid Response Squad, on Monday, arrested leading members of NURTW in the state including Kunle Poly and Sego.
Sego, whose real name is Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle is the NURTW Lagos State Treasurer while Kunle Poly whose real name is Abdulazeez Adekunle Lawal is the Chairman, Lagos Island ‘B’ of the union.
They were arrested by the RRS State Commander, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi.
In a statement to newsmen, the police accused the duo of being behind dangerous clashes in Idumota and its environs which has continuously crippled commercial activities in the area.
Recall that factions of the NURTW had last Thursday clashed in Idumota which resulted in the loss of two lives and grounding of commercial and vehicular movements.
“The arrest was effected today at a meeting where the two NURTW members along with some other stakeholders converged,” RRS said.
Kunle Poly and Sego have been transferred to Zone II, Onikan, Lagos.
The state Chairman of NURTW, MC Oluomo has also briefed newsmen on the position so far.
