Veteran international singer and 22-time Grammy Award winner, Stevie Wonder has revealed he will relocate to Ghana to live out the rest of his life.
He said this in an interview with Oprah Winfrey citing racism and political turmoil in the US as reasons for his resolve.
He added that he has become weary of America’s infuriating and mystifying unwillingness to accept all citizens equally.
The 70-year-old respected singer made the revelation in a recent episode of “Oprah Conversations” saying that once he goes to ancestral home, he will not be coming back.
According to him, “I promise you (America), if you do the right thing, I will give you this song. I will give it to you. You can have it. Because I wanna see this nation smile again. And I want to see it before I leave to travel to move to Ghana, because I’m going to do that.
The revelation took presenter, Oprah by surprise as she took a few seconds to process it.
She asked to be sure, “You’re gonna move permanently to Ghana ?”
Stevie responded, “I am. I don’t want to see my children’s children’s children have to say ‘Oh please like me, please respect, please know that I am important, please value me.’ What is that ?”
Stevie Wonder added that this was not the first time he was considering moving to Ghana.
He said the same thing to the International Association of African American Music that he was more comfortable with the sense of community in Ghana that he did in the United States of America.
