The June 12 protests have commenced in earnest across major cities in Nigeria especially Akure, Portharcourt, Abuja, Oshogbo and Lagos.
This is in spite of the fact that the National Association of Nigerian Students leadership, yesterday backed out of the protests citing threats of hijack by politicians.
There are still fears that hoodlums may be unleashed on the protesters who have remained peaceful so far.
Initial reports say the protesters were discouraged by the security presence but when that was relaxed, the crowds trouped out to the streets chanting their grievances against the government.
The protesters are also keenly watched by armed security operatives who in some cases were seen urging them to ensure the protests remain peaceful.
Earlier at about 8:30am, youths had gathered around the Gudu area of Abuja but were dispersed by police men who fired tear gas at them:

The protest planned for today the 12th of June, 2021 has started in some cities: Akure, Portharcourt, Abuja, Oshogbo, Lagos are among the cities where the protest has already kick started.
Heavy security operatives are seen present in various locations chosen for protest.

Residents are strongly advised to remain indoors whilst being security conscious.
Yoruba activist, Sunday Igboho promised to go ahead with the protest in a broadcast published by his media team.
He also called on the security agents in the region to ensure no protester is killed while thanking the Western States governors for allowing him run his rallies peacefully.
