The former governor of Borno, Senator Kashim Shettima, has reacted to news that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu plans to Islamise Nigeria.
This comes amid backlash on the Tinubu’s choice of the sitting Senator, a Muslim as running mate when he is himself, a Muslim.
Tinubu, on the 10th of July, announced Kashim Shettima, as his running mate ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
Many party loyalists and muslims alike applauded the choice while many more, especially Christians frowned at the selection.
They wondered why he didn’t pick a Christian since he is a Muslim. Some aggrieved party members have gone ahead to dump the party. They argue that a Muslim-Muslim ticket in a religious country like Nigeria is unacceptable.
On Friday, July 15, Shettima hosted some party members when he dismissed claims that Tinubu is out to Islamise the country.
He noted that Tinubu’s wife of over 40 years is a Christian and a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
The Borno politician added that the national leader of APC does not also impose his religion on his children.
In his words: ”They are accusing him of an attempt of Islamising Nigeria. Has he started with Islamising his own family? Tinubu’s running mate might be a Muslim but his life mate of over 40 years is not only a Christian but a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
“He did not impose his Islamic faith on his own Children. He was the first governor to hand mission schools back to their owners. He did not even impose his religion on his own children.
“He returned missionary schools to the original owners. He has groomed people from all aspects of Life.”
