The Kwara State Government has shut down 10 schools where the wearing of hijab is disputed.
The state Ministry of Education gave the update today, 8th of March citing safety concerns.
Kemi Adeosun, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education said that the schools which were earlier told to reopen today, Monday, will remain closed.
According to her, “The Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development wishes to inform members of the public that the 10 government schools where the use of hijab is disputed will remain shut until a later date.
“This decision has been taken for safety reasons.”
The mInistry listed the schools to include:
- C&S College, Sabo Oke
- St Anthony College, Offa Road
- ECWA School, Ojo Iya
- Surulere Baptist Secondary School
- Bishop Smith Secondary School, Abba Dam
- CAC Secondary School, Asa Dam Road
- St Barnabas Secondary School, Sabo Oke
- St John School, Maraba St Williams Secondary School, Taiwo Isale
- St John Secondary School, Maraba
The statement read further that, “The government, therefore, directs school children and teachers in the affected schools to remain at home until the contrary is announced.

“The government remains committed to fairness, pluralism and respect for the law and rights of every citizen at all times..”
Muslim leaders had insisted that that students wear head covering, an order disputed by their Christian counterparts who said it negates legacy of the founders/missionaries who built the schools .
Following several peace meetings, the state government resolved that the use of hijab be implemented in all public schools in the state.
It ordered the reopening of the affected schools today, but the development is now thwarted for safety reason.
