It has been a day of horror at Effurun in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State after a tanker fully loaded with Petrol exploded crushing six students to death.
The tanker is said to have been loaded with 45 thousand litres of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) and was moving at high speed when it experienced a break failure.
It moved uncontrollably at top speed until it exploded leaving massive plumes of smoke and fire for several metres.
The accident happened on Thursday as the students were returning from school in large numbers along the NPA Expressway, near the Army Barracks, Effurun.
Six of the students are said to have died on the spot while an unspecified number were trapped.
Eyewitnesses say that the tanker, while on high speed, somersaulted, veered off the road and rammed into the students by the roadside.
The reports also say that emergency responders, including the operatives of the Delta State Fire Service rushed to the scene to quench the fire and prevent it from spreading to buildings within the vicinity and escalating the horror.
Sympathisers, most of them wailing at the gory incident also lent a helping hand to rescue as many of the trapped students as possible.
