A video has emerged of at least 50 Nigerian nationals, mostly students at the Hungarian-Ukrainian and the Ukrainian-Polish borders begging for their lives as border security threatened to shoot them all.
Begging for their lives, the students cried that “we don’t have arms, we’re students, we’ve been in the cold for 3 days, please spare our lives…”
A handful of Nigerians however, successfully crossed by rail from other borders after long hours in the cold, sometimes as low as 2 degrees centigrade.
Some are said to have fainted while many have not eaten since the war broke out. They also insist that life in those harsh conditions is better than returning home to Nigeria. They vowed to remain overseas no matter what it takes.
A voice in the video lamented that while other nationalities are allowed to pass through the borders, Nigerians were separated and turned back.
Speaking during a meeting with envoys of European Union countries, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama said the government is receiving emergency calls from Nigerians fleeing Ukraine for Poland.
He stated that the government is aware that Polish authorities are refusing Nigerians entry.
“And we have had a number of calls, desperate calls and that there are cases of women and pregnant women and so forth,” Onyeama said.
Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. It is the second-largest country by area in Europe after Russia, which it borders to the east and north-east.
It is currently invaded by Russia and diplomatic efforts continue in Belarus to quell hostilities.
