Nigerian social media celebrity, Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, otherwise known as Hushpuppi will be slammed with 20 years in a U S Federal prison if found guilty of the charges he currently faces.
The United States Attorney’s Office, Central District of California read out the charges on 3rd July. They comprise high profile intercontinental money laundering and businesses email compromise.
The case reads that the money laundering involved hundreds of millions of dollars from “Cybercrime Schemes.”
Excerpts of the Attorney’s Office’s press release published on the 3rd of July says that, “a Dubai resident who flaunted his extravagant lifestyle on social media has arrived in the United State to face criminal charges alleging that he conspired to launder hundreds of millions of dollars from business email compromise (BEC) frauds and other scams, including schemes targeting a U S law firm, a foreign bank and an English Premier League soccer club.”
The Statement further reads that: “If convicted of conspiracy to engage in money laundering, Abbas would face a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.”
Jesse Baker, Special Agent in Charge of the United States Secret Service, Los Angeles Office described the operations of the syndicate led by Hushpuppi a sophisticated network that spanned international boundaries, traditional financial systems and the digital sphere.
Baker regretted that “technology has erased geographical boundaries leaving trans-national criminal syndicates to believe that they are beyond the reach of law enforcement.”
He was however glad that the Department of Justice succeeded in cracking Hushpuppi’s syndicate because of its strong alliance with their U S federal law counterpart. Jesse Baker describes the partnership as one strong enough to dismantle a sophisticated organised crime group who preyed upon unsuspecting businesses. For him cracking the syndicate, leaves Americans feeling a bit more secure.
