Veteran Nigerian singer and actress, Onyeka Onwenu has shared her experience in an abusive marriage. She also revealed how she quit.

The famous artist told Kikelomo Atanda-Owo who also revealed that she went through an abusive marriage, that her husband would have killed her, had she endured further.

Onyeka stated that she did not want the marriage to end but continuing would have been fatal.

She added that it was not good for her to have her children watch her continuously depressed as, in addition to the physical abuse, neither she nor her children got financial support from her spouse.

The singer said she was carrying the weight of the family while still married so she decided to quit.

According to her, her abusive husband did not pay school fees or even buy clothes for their children. She singlehandedly took care or and trained everyone of them to Masters level.

Onyeka Onwenu said she wrote a book about about her experience and is glad many women in the same situation she found herself are inspired by it.

In her words, “I went through my marriage, it was difficult because I really did not want my marriage to end but I could not take it anymore, it would have killed me.

“I always say this and that is the truth. It was not good for the children to live in that kind of environment where the mother is depressed, the mother is carrying the weight of the whole family.”
