Ibrahim Magu, EFCC Boss Suspended Over Fraud Allegations

News - Women's Perspective

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu has been suspended over allegations of fraud.

The anti-graft agency boss is facing a presidential panel on corruption since Monday, 6th of June.

Sources say he has been in detention since then and may spend some more time in detention considering the overwhelming evidence against him.

One source adds that the decision to place him on suspension is line with international practice. In most cases such suspects never return to the positions they were indicted from.

Besides being suspended, the EFCC boss may be sacked considering the fraud allegations amounting to over N1 trillion.

An analyst adds that “It is commonsensical that when an investigation of this nature is ongoing, you don’t allow the person being investigated to keep the keys of the office for which he is being investigated.

“This is because if he keeps the keys, there can be a kind of tampering with documents or evidence.

“it is not logical and it is even undemocratic to allow such to happen”

Another social media user is of the opinion that the presidency knew that Ibrahim Magu would be suspended and so did not bother to send Magu’s name to the National Assembly for confirmation of appointment.

According to

Oluwasegun, ADEOGUN, So @MBuhari knew that Magu, Acting Chair of @officialEFCC is in that position in acting capacity but didn’t bother to send his name to @nassnigeria for confirmation as substantive chair until he was accused of corruption, investigated then #SUSPENDED! Dis life sef is not balance.”
Expectedly permutations have began as to Ibrahim Magu’s possible successor. As with every Nigerian appointment, Religion and ethnicity will play a major role.
Samuel Ogundipe paints the typical picture of what to expect as his replacement is decided. According to him in a tweet today:
“Magu’s removal now likely to set off a succession controversy. Ola Olukoyede, a Redeemed pastor from Ekiti & EFCC secretary, is the next most-senior official that should take over. But he’s “not an operative.” This leaves Mohammed Abba, director of operations, as next in line.”
