The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba has restored the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit of the Nigeria Police Force.
The unit was disbanded by the former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu last year after the #EndSARS protests.
Stating his reason for scrapping the unit, Adamu said he had received series of allegations of brutality, extra-judicial killings and human rights abuses.
In a report published on Thursday by Sahara Reporters, the news platform said that IGP Usman Alkali Baba revived the dreaded SARS unit under new terms and conditions of operation.
Baba stated that no SARS personnel is allowed to interfere in any civil matter, cybercrime or arrest suspected fraudsters.
He added that that the SARS officers are strictly for armed robbery and kidnapping cases.
The new rules of engagement:
“No SARS personnel is allowed to interface in any civil matter. They are not allowed to interfere in cybercrime
“No SARS personnel is allowed to conduct a stop and search exercise unless there is a distress call from victims or members of the public.
“They are not allowed to be involved in commercial matters, debt recovery, (landlord vs tenant issues).
“They are not allowed to interfere in any social/relationship cases (marital matters, boyfriend/girlfriend relationship).
“They are strictly for armed robbery and kidnapping cases!”
