Inspiration

Arise TV Managing Director, Ijeoma Nwogwugwu has been named the most powerful Woman Journalist in Nigeria.

According to Women in Journalism Africa (WIJAfrica), a global organisation of women in the media industry, Nwogwugwu emerged the best out of 25 top picks. 150 candidates were reviewed to arrive at the 25 most powerful.

WIJAfrica, in highlighting its criteria for selection says that the size and effectiveness of her influence in national affairs and the media industry, experience, social and cultural influence came into play

The group tweeted that it “worked with a team of industry leaders and practitioners to rank the 25 Most Powerful Women (out of 150!) in the media particularly journalism.

The group says it measures the most powerful woman journalist in 4 criteria:

  1. size and effectiveness of her influence in national affairs
  2. Influence in the media industry
  3. Experience and arc of her career
  4. Social and cultural influence

Ijeoma is the second woman managing Director of a major media house after Doyinsola Abiola of the defunct Concord Newspaper.

WIJAfrica said her column in ThisDay contributed to shaping Nigeria’s policy and providing the much needed healthy criticism that the Obasanjo administration and various government administrations needed.

Government and business leaders are known to make deliberate efforts to be in her good books. Nonetheless, it does not affect her objective reporting.
