The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has banned open grazing and cow consumption in the South Eastern region of Nigeria.
The directive was issued by the Head of Directorate of State (DOS), Mazi Chike Edoziem who announced that the ban will take effect next year.
He said that the ban is a fallout of attacks and abuse of residents of the region by suspected Fulani herdsmen and bandits.
Edoziem added that the pro-Biafra group has also banned the rearing and consumption of ‘Fulani cows’ in the region.
The IPOB representative said that only local breed of cows would henceforth “be consumed and used for all ceremonies in Biafraland.”
There have been accusations of preferential treatment by the Federal Government of bandits compared to secessionist groups.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammed dismissed the accusations insisting that no preferential treatment is given to any violent group.
He said that the reports that some groups are getting more clampdown from security forces than others are misleading and erroneous.
